No robots - specialist website!

Family friendly site. No robots!

The winningbreak.travel website is created and maintained by real flesh-and-blood people. We've been frustrated by many travel and activity shopping websites which are little more than cloned money-making machines. They might as well be produced by robots. Well not this one! Our core website content is written the old-fashioned way, based on experiences with our own families, industry knowledge, and careful research. We don't use automated content management, remote-controlled product feeds, data aggregator "news", or present you with annoying pop-up adverts.

However, don't go thinking that we're totally averse to modern technology. Our entire site is indexed by a custom search engine. We also provide you with direct access to extensive databases of tours, budget accommodation, attractions, and events, complete with secure on-line booking facilities.

Parts of the website content and the blog may reflect our own recent experiences and current opinions. In some cases we'll provide information just because we think it's useful or interesting, without trying to sell you anything at all. That's the kind of people we are. We're based in Cumbria, so you may notice a slight focus on the north of England and Scotland. We consider that to be a strength.

Keep checking our blog and our Twitter feed for our latest news, features and offers. Feel free to leave your own comments on the blog, or send an e-mail to the address at the foot of the page with your questions or suggestions. Please explore and enjoy the website. We hope that you'll appreciate the difference.

Scottish B&B

Budget holiday accommodation

Family holidays in hostels and other budget accommodation are becoming increasingly popular. Hostels, B&B's and guesthouses often offer comfortable family rooms and smart shared lounges. Some have restaurants, swimming pools, gardens, internet access, and other comforts. They can be very child-friendly, particularly when compared with the stuffiness and blandness of some larger chain hotels. Campsites are the ultimate in informality.

We can help you find budget holiday accommodation worldwide. There are over 5,000 hostels, B&B's, apartments, budget hotels, guesthouses & campsites in our database. We have everything from cosy B&B's in the remotest parts of Scotland, to gleaming tower block hostels in the centre of Tokyo. Choose and book immediately with our Property Search tool. There are comprehensive descriptions of facilities, with photos, maps and directions. See our Hostel & Tour Booking Support page if you need help.

winner's trophyTOP TEN family leisure activities

We've found from experience that having a few activities planned in advance of a holiday leads to a more rewarding and harmonious family experience. An "activity" may be free of charge or paid-for. Free activities can be just as successful and memorable as ones that cost money, such as a game of rounders on the beach, a walk in the forest, or skimming stones on the sea. Paid-for activities provide opportunities to do things that are special, new or different.

You may choose to base your whole holiday around a single fabulous experience (like a safari), or just book one or two special treats (like a theme park visit or a balloon ride). That's up to you. If you're cost conscious, we suggest you look at our Offers page for ideas. Whatever your preference, we hope that we can provide some inspiration. That's what our top ten is all about. Enjoy...

  1. Watersports - suitable for a wide range of ages and fitness levels. Sailing, kayaking, water-skiing, windsurfing, white water rafting, power boat rides, etc, etc.
  2. UK city break - we're spoilt for choice in the UK. We've picked Liverpool as our favourite, because it's a few hours drive from where we live, and because the city has a great "personality". There's a huge range of accommodation types, places to visit, and loads of shops. We recommend the Premier Inn at Albert Dock, an atmospheric hotel with family rooms at a budget price.
  3. Tour the Scottish Highlands. Visit castles, mountains, waterfalls, and villages. For something a bit different, we recommend a tour round a whisky distillery (followed by some product sampling). Search on our Tours page, or try Radical Travel.
  4. European city break - we love Barcelona. Fantastic culture, very family-friendly, unusual and highly memorable sights, easy to get to from numerous UK airports, and close to Port Aventura theme park. Public transport in Barcelona is frequent and cheap. Children are welcomed. Food and service is really good.
  5. Walking & cycling. Choose a route and cycle along it, or find a hill and climb it! Costs very little, and offers a great feeling of satisfaction when you finish the journey. A certain amount of preparation is needed to avoid becoming a mountain rescue statistic, so plan your route in advance, wear suitable clothing, and take appropriate safety gear. One of our best holidays was based in a holiday cottage in the middle of a grouse moor, with our cycling and walking gear. No mobile phone signal, no x-box, no shops... bliss! We suggest you start your accommodation search at our Villas page.
  6. A driving experience. There are many options available, ranging from 4x4 experiences that the whole family can enjoy, to Formula 1 driving for unforgettable high speed thrills.
  7. Visit a big-name attraction. Ride on the London Eye, tour a famous football ground, go to a show, spend a day at a theme park...
  8. Paintball - available all over the UK. Good (clean?) fun for the fitter family members. Great for wearing out the kids. Find a location with National Paintball.
  9. Hostelling - a holiday where you can meet new people, discover the unexpected, and travel the world on a budget. Hostels can be found in major cities, towns, and remote country locations. Not all hostels are suitable for families, but plenty are. Search and book via our Hostels page.
  10. Learn a new skill, or brush up on an existing one. What about sports tuition for the kids, or a cookery course for the adults? Try something wacky, like a flying lesson.

Don't forget to buy Travel Insurance. Have a winning break!
